Green Day debuted their new video for "Oh Love" on MTV last night, then the band discussed their new material on the network with Sway Calloway. Talking about the song, singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong said, "It's kind of a tension ballad ... instead of pulling at your heart strings, it's like a noose pulling at your heart a little bit, and trying to keep your emotions intact. It's very lustful, which is kind of a subject we haven't gotten into in a long time." As for the upcoming collection of records, ¡Uno! ¡Dos! and ¡Tre!, Armstrong said the band wanted to get away from the socio-politics of their recent albums. "It was a time for us to step away [from that], because we didn't want to come across as politicians," Armstrong said. "We're in a band first and foremost, and we wanted to have a good time making music. So it was kind of a way of us getting back to basics." You can see the "Oh Love" video below:
Lady Gaga will appear on a track from rapper Kendrick Lamar, the Pop star revealed yesterday on Twitter. Gaga wrote, "I am so excited to announce that a record I've been working on has now become a collaboration with @KendrickLamar for HIS ALBUM. I wrote ‘PARTYNAUSEOUS’ about Jakarta, and my relationship with that country. Wishing I could "get high with the enemy" and make peace. Once @kendricklamar + I started talking about life + his forward thinking views about love + hip hop, the song became something more." Lamar's new album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, will be out October 2.
Flo Rida's hit "Whistle" lands at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, unseating "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen. "Whistle" is Flo Rida's third #1 single, and ties Katy Perry for the most top five Hot 100 hits in 2012. The song has sold almost four million digital singles worldwide and is Flo Rida's seventh straight single to be certified platinum by the RIAA.
The NFL has announced that Cee Lo Green will sing this year's Thursday Night Football theme song. According to the NFL, each Thursday night game will open with a 90-second fan-sourced video uploaded by fans performing Cee Lo's new song, "I Love Football," set to the tune of The Ramones' "Blitzkrieg Bop." "It's finally that time again… and I really love my football," Cee Lo said in a statement. "The NFL always brings us the biggest and brightest entertainment spectacle in sports and now with 'Fanthem,' NFL Network gives loyal fans the chance to participate!" The song will debut with Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers fans singing the Ramones' chorus along with Cee Lo on September 13.
Soundgarden's reunion album is reportedly due on November 13, according to the August 30 issue of Rolling Stone. Guitarist Kim Thayil told the magazine that the new album "re-establishes that we still rock, we’re still heavy, and we’re still a little weird."
Silversun Pickups
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has begun to use Silversun Pickups' 2009 hit "Panic Switch" at campaign stops without gaining the band's permission, prompting a cease and desist order from the band's attorney. Silversun Pickups say they have no intention of endorsing the Romney campaign. "We don't like people going behind our backs, using our music without asking, and we don't like the Romney campaign," said lead singer/guitarist BrianAubert in a statement. "We're nice, approachable people. We won't bite. Unless you're Mitt Romney! We were very close to just letting this go because the irony was too good. While he is inadvertently playing a song that describes his whole campaign, we doubt that 'Panic Switch' really sends the message he intends." The Romney camp released a response noting that the SSPU song was played during an event set-up before the Governor's arrival and added "this is not a song we would have played intentionally."
Bassist Robert Birch, a long-time member of Elton John's band, was found dead near Los Angeles on Wednesday of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. The L.A. County Assistant Coroner Chief told Reuters that the death is "being investigated as a possible suicide." Birch joined Elton John's touring band in the early 1990s and played bass on John's 1995 LP Made in England, 1997's Big Picture, 2004's Peachtree Road and 2006's The Captain and the Kid. "I am devastated and shocked at the loss of my friend and fellow musician, Bob Birch. My heart goes out to Bob's wife Michele, his son Jonathan and his family," said John in a statement. "To me Bob was family. He had been a member of my band for 20 years; we played over 1,400 concerts together. He was one of the greatest musicians I have ever worked with, and in all our years on the road he never played or sang a bad note. I cannot find the words to describe this tragic death, and how much I loved him. May he rest in peace."
The Grammy Museum unveiled a tribute to Whitney Houston on Wednesday that was put together by the singer's family and will run until February 2013. The exhibit, titled "Whitney! Celebrating the Musical Legacy of Whitney Houston," features items such as the singer's iconic gowns, Grammy awards, film scripts, modeling shots, personal memorabilia and private letters from music producer/record executive Clive Davis. "We have picked the things that people will find the most interesting and, in many cases, bring back fun memories," her sister-in-law Pat Houston told reporters, according to Reuters. "We are really very overjoyed that we are here today to represent and be a part of such a wonderful and splendid career of such a beautiful and talented woman."
Kottonmouth Kings are morning the loss of their former member, Patrick "Pakelika" Cochrun, who passed away over the weekend. Band member Brad "Daddy X" Xavier said in a statement,"We are out on tour preparing for the release of our new record. At what should be an exciting time for the group we have been blindsided, shocked and deeply saddened by the terrible news about our friend and former band member Pakelika's sudden death. Nothing can prepare you for such horrible news and this reminds us all just how precious life is and the importance of friends and family. It has been a couple of years since Big Pak performed with the Kings, but his presence and the impact he made on us will live forever. Patrick 'Pakelika' Cochrun was a very unique and special person. We traveled the world together and played hundreds of shows together. The memories and experiences we shared will live forever in our hearts and souls. We want to thank the underground for the tremendous outpouring of condolences and support at such a sorrow filled time. Take care of yourselves and spread love and positive vibrations. Rest in peace big Pak; you will be missed!" In honor and tribute to Pakelika, the Kottonmouth Kings have dedicated their new video for "Mr. Cali Man" to him online at http://bit.ly/Ph8nlL. "Pakelika's friends and family want us all to celebrate his life and memory. We are making plans now for an event to celebrate Pak's life and to help raise money for his hospital bills. Details will be announced shortly, until then we ask that everyone light a candle at 4:20pm this week for our fallen brother and friend. This is a very sad time for us all, but let's all take some time and remember Pak for the loving and caring person he was," added SuburbanNoize president Kevin Zinger.
