Is the ad-supported digital music start-up SpiralFrog having difficulties getting off the ground? The online music store has lost its CEO, Robin Kent, and a number of other executives in recent weeks. According to CNet, Kent was ousted from the company the day after Christmas, which led to the resignation of three members of the board of directors. Sources tell CNet that at least six members of the SpiralFrog senor executive team have quit as well, including the Chief Marketing, Strategy and Operating Officers.
SpiralFrog was announced last year with an ad-supported model that would allow music to be downloaded for free by users. However, among the major labels, only Universal Music has signed on with the company thus far. SpiralFrog was expected to launch before the end of 2006, but no launch date has been officially announced yet.
"[SpiralFrog's executive turmoil] suggests there are no legs to the idea of ad-supported music," said Steve Mayall, who runs the blog Music Ally and first broke the news of Kent's exit. "If the company that shouts the loudest can't make a go of it, then some might suspect the rest of the companies involved can't make a go of it either. That's not true. I believe there is great potential here."
