Michael Buble's new CD, Call Me Irresponsible, claims the #1 spot on the album sales chart this week as it sold 145,000 copies in its second week in stores, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Strength & Loyalty debuts at #2, moving 119,000 units. The album is the group's first Top 10 effort since BTNHResurrection debuted at #2 in 2000. R&B singer Bobby Valentino's Special Occasion bows at #3, and last week's chart-topper, Ne-Yo, moves to #4 with 89,000 copies sold of Because of You. Elsewhere, Barbra Streisand earns her 29th Top 10 album with Streisand: Live in Concert 2006, which comes in at #7, and Bjork scores her highest album debut with Volta at #9. Other notable debuts this week include Elliott Smith's posthumous New Moon bowing at #24 and Scottish act Travis' The Boy With No Name coming in at #58.
Daddy Yankee has announced a 17-date tour, starting on August 31 in Rosemont, IL. The performer is set to release his newest album, El Cartel: The Big Boss, on June 5. Fans will have an opportunity to purchase tickets to Yankee’s concerts early by pre-ordering El Cartel on iTunes. The release boasts a superstar supporting cast including Akon, Will.I.Am, Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls, and Fergie, who teamed up with Yankee and producer Scott Storch to generate the first single, “Impacto.” The video for “Impacto” features Yankee jet-setting to numerous locations (while actually never leaving the studio), much like he will this summer during his tour. “You see the magic of TV,” Yankee said in an interview with MTV News. “We went to Mexico, New York, Japan, London and Puerto Rico. Everything was on green [screen]. Obviously you’re gonna see a lot of green in the studio, but once you see the video [on television], it’s another game. We’re pretending to be on one worldwide tour with Daddy Yankee because Daddy Yankee’s sound is a worldwide sound.”
| Another piece of the mysterious Smashing Pumpkins reunion puzzle has been revealed, as the cover art to the new album Zeitgeist has been unveiled. Seen at the right, the cover was created by graphic designer Shepard Fairey, best known for the "Obey Giant" posters. The font also matches the one used on the Pumpkins' original "I Am One" single. Fairey is quoted on the Pumpkins' MySpace page as saying, "I think global warming is an issue that is currently relevant, time sensitive, and a symptom of the shortsightedness of the U.S. As a broader metaphor, the drowning Statue of Liberty, a revered icon of the U.S., symbolizes the eminent demise of many of the ideals upon which the nation was founded. Civil liberties, freedom of speech, privacy, etc. have been decreasing since 9/11. The sun in the image could either be setting or rising and this ambiguity shows that there is still hope to turn things around."Christina Aguilera has passed rigorous Chinese censorship standards and has been approved to perform one concert in Shanghai on June 26. In the past, Chinese censorship organizations have proven stringent in their regulations, particularly in regards to overly sexual lyrics. The Rolling Stones were forced to avoid certain songs because of their sexual content, and Jay-Z’s Chinese concert in 2006 was cancelled altogether because of explicit lyrics. A source told Reuters that “not every foreign artist has the luck to win Beijing’s approval and Christina’s sexy performance was once a concern when applying to the regulators.” Angels And Airwaves have cut ties with bassist Ryan Sinn. Although Sinn tried to remain diplomatic by saying that “throwing dirt just seems desperate and tablodial,” he couldn’t help but express some resentment about his release. “All I’ll say as to why I was kicked out, the reasons I was given weren’t at all honest, and severely hypocritical to the point of abhorrent disgust,” Sinn wrote on the fansite thearmyofangels.com. Although no replacement has been announced, former 30 Seconds To Mars bassist Matt Wachter is rumored to be a candidate. Punk mainstay Social Distortion recently announced a summer tour on which they will feature songs from their upcoming best-of album. Greatest Hits, which is due to be released on June 26, will feature a new single dubbed "Far Behind" and 10 other songs that span Social Distortion’s long and diverse career. The band's headlining dates kick off June 29 in Urbana, IL and they have 13 cities lined up on the mid-summer tour, with The Hangmen and The Heart Attacks set as the opening acts. Ben Folds is the latest artist to host his own cruise vacation with fans. "The Ben Folds Experience" will set sail on February 21 of next year and the four day cruise will visit Jamaica. Other artists will also be on board for the trip.
