Quick Hits: Rihanna, Kid Rock, How To Destroy Angels, Miley Cyrus, Linkin Park, Fiona Apple, Paul McCartney
September 24, 2012

Following recent reports that Rihanna would have new music out this fall, the Pop singer confirmed that she will be releasing a new single this Wednesday. "Diamonds" is the lead single from her upcoming seventh album, expected out in November, as well as the name of her 2013 tour. The song will touch down at radio at 8 a.m. ET on Wednesday morning, and go on sale an hour later via iTunes. Speaking to Elvis Duran at the iHeartRadio Festival over the weekend, Rihanna said, "The lyrics are very hopeful and positive, but it's about love and the gears are a little different from what people would expect. I'm excited to surprise them sonically," adding that it is a "happy and hippy record."

Kid Rock will release Rebel Soul on November 19 via Top Dog/Atlantic Records. Produced by the Kid himself, the new album is described in a release as "a return to form for Rock who with this album cements his place as the premier genre-hopping rock and roller of all time." The lead single, "Let's Ride," will land at radio soon.

How To Destroy Angels
Trent Reznor's post-Nine Inch Nails band How To Destroy Angels will release An Omen, the group's second EP, on November 13. The group, which includes Reznor's wife Mariqueen Maandig, producer/musician Atticus Ross and Reznor's longtime visual collaborator Rob Sheridan, has also signed to Columbia Records. In a blog post, Reznor said the EP "contains six songs, some of which are from our full-length LP which is coming early next year. We are making some videos, we are going to be performing live, and that's all the details I have for now on those matters." He added, "Regarding our decision to sign with Columbia, we've really spent a long time thinking about things and it makes sense for a lot of reasons, including a chance to work with our old friend Mark Williams. There's a much more granular and rambling answer I could give (and likely will in an interview someplace) but it really comes down to us experimenting and trying new things to see what best serves our needs. Complete independent releasing has its great points but also comes with shortcomings."

Speaking to Billboard backstage at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas, Miley Cyrus said she has been hard at work on new music. Cyrus hopes to release a new single by the end of 2012, with a new album out next year. "I've been in so many sessions and just kind of bunkering down and working really hard and perfecting everything," she said. "I've never really had time to do that, to kind of have my record kind of 'done' and then sit there and make it until it's perfect. So, it's been really, really fun. This whole year that's all I've really dedicated life to." Cyrus also revealed she recently collaborated with Pharrell Williams in the studio.

Linkin Park has become the first Rock band to cross one billion views on YouTube. Fuse reports that the video for their single "New Divide" has over 131 million views alone. The second-most-viewed band on YouTube is the Red Hot Chili Peppers with 327 million, followed by Green Day with 245 million. Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and Rihanna are the only other musicians with over a billion YouTube views.

Fiona Apple discussed her arrest last week for drug possession onstage on Friday night, though the singer did not directly talk about the incident so much as ramble in a stream-of-conscious monologue. According to a YouTube video shot at her concert in Houston, she said that most of the people at the jail were "very nice" to her, but there were four people who she claims she essentially heard "everything you did and said" and "laughed at me all night." She said she will keep their secrets "unless you're interested in being a celebrity."
The story took yet another turn this afternoon, as TMZ has posted a letter from Hudspeth County Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Rusty Fleming, mocking Apple for her on-stage comments. Fleming said, ""Two weeks ago nobody in the country cared about what you had to say, -- now that you’ve been arrested it appears your entire career has been jump-started. Don’t worry Sweetie, I won't bill you..." He also added, "Even though you and I only met briefly in the hallway, I don't know you but I'm sure you're an awesome and talented young woman and even though I'm not a fan of yours, I am sure there are thousands of them out there, and I’m sure that they would just as soon you get this all behind you and let you go back to what you do best—so my last piece of advice is simple 'just shut-up and sing'."

A new live Paul McCartney DVD/BluRay will be out November 13. Titled Live Kisses, the concert film was shot in the intimate Capitol Studios in Los Angeles and originally streamed as a webcast to celebrate the release of his last album, Kisses On The Bottom,
